Seat Reservation Fee Or Not?

If a traveler books a flight to Europe on a certain carrier, and one of the segments is a codeshare on a different airline that charges for advance seat reservations, will the traveler have to pay the seat fee in addition to the cost of the original airfare? I became curious after I saw an American Airlines advertisement for a flight that was a codeshare with British Airways.

We find the seat reservation fees quite reasonable. On certain planes, booking well in advance, we pick from the 2 seat rows and avoid sitting with a third person. No disturbing anyone or waking them up. We feel that it is well worth the minimal extra cost on most airlines.
