Seasonal Road Closures in the Alps

I will be traveling to Italy next March and am considering renting a car and driving from Frankfurt to Mantua (Mantova) which will mean driving through Switzerland. According to msn.com maps and directions, there are a number of seasonal road closures along the route. Can anyone tell me if these are predicated by current weather conditions or are they like the Trail Ridge road in Rocky Mountain National Park (which is closed approximately between Labor Day and Memorial Day depending on snowfall)? Is there a website I can visit to find out alternative driving routes if the most logical one is closed due to snow or am I crazy to even consider driving through the alps at that time of year?

Thanks in advance!

There are enough tunnels through the Alps to keep the major routes open year round. Switzerland is full of tunnels. Barring a major snow storm (which nobody can predict this far off!), you shouldn't have any problems driving from Italy to Germany.

Andreas,

Dankeschoen! That is perfect since I read German fairly well (some say I speak it pretty well, too, but I'm only truly comfortable after hoisting a few beers).
