Schengen visa expired, can I go to Ireland?

I am a US citizen in Luxembourg. My three-month tourist visa has expired. Can I take a trip to Ireland, or will I be deported? Is Ireland OK to travel to because it is not in the Schengen zone, or can I not travel anywhere in Europe without being sent home? Thanks.

Do you plan to try to go back to Luxembourg? Ireland probably won't care where you are coming from as long as you don't overstay there, but I don't think you'd be allowed back in Luxembourg until the six month period from your first date of entry into the Schengen zone had passed.

The UK and Ireland are not in the Schengen Zone, but almost all, if not all, of the rest of Europe is, so as you have used up your maximum of 90 days in Schengen countries, that's it for now. If you overstay you can be summarily deported and banned from re-entry for (I think) 5 years.

10 years.....you can go to Ireland and/or the UK for 3 months and then return to Schengen. If you wanted to.

Of course, if you have stayed 3 months on your Schengen tourist visa and are leaving for Ireland, the immigration people there may have a lot of questions as to how long you plan to stay there, how you plan to support yourself, etc.

There's no guarantee that anyone will be allowed into a country just because they show up or have a U.S. Passport. It's up to immigration to let you in.

The only place you can't be prevented from entering is the U.S.

Thank you very much! I will forget about the trip to Ireland. I am going back to the states in a few weeks.

Well, as they say, if you are already wet...you might as well enjoy the swim. As mentioned, the worst case is an uncomfortable interview with immigration officials and possibly a 10 year prohibition on travel to the Schengen Zone. Keep in mind that they may not interview you with sensitivity as to when your flight leaves, meaning you may be left with the hassle of a missed flight, possibly needing to replace that non-refundable ticket...so get to the airport early. You do not mention by how much you exceeded the visa. If it is just a few weeks, then maybe a slap on the wrist (plead ignorance) or nothing may be mentioned; a few months or years...then be prepared for the worst. Please do us all a favor though, upon return, post more details and the outcome; we would love to hear.
