Hello! I will be traveling from Florence to Paris by train and want to take a scenic detour through the Alps. We have severals days, so time is not an issue (how often do you get to say that!?) Any suggestions for the best route to take? Thanks a lot!
One other option if you have a few days and your travel is later than June 1. The suggestions is to stay in Muerren in the Berner Oberland. It's everything you would want in a Swiss alpine village and it's 5,300' in the alps. You have to take a gondola to get there. You will see that portion of the alps. You are also within gondola and short train rides to Gimmelwald, Wengen and the very scenic tops of the Jungfrau and the Shilthorn mountain tops. You can gondola up to the top of the Shilthorn from Muerren for breakfast.
Suggest either the Chalet Fontana or the Eiger. It's an 8.0hr. train journey from Muerren to Paris via Bern. Several train changes until you get to Bern. Very scenic all the way.
The best train runs to Paris from Switzerland are via Bern and Basel. You can also pick up a good run from Zurich.
Scenic Option #1 - Glacier Express from which you can pick up in Brig, Switzerland and take it to Chur.
Scenic Option #2 - William Tell Express. Pick this up in Lugano (close to Lake Como) and ride to Luzern. Luzern is a very nice overnight option.
From Luzern, head for Bern to pick up your TGV to Paris. Or, if you have more time, detour to Zurich (no alps) and then on to Paris.
Hi, I agree with Larry about Murren. Also, If you take the Glacier Express you might want to stop at Zermatt instead. Both are good options for visiting picturesque Alpine and car free villages with Alpine views.
MY favorite rail route through the Alps is the Brenner Pass. If time is no object I'd go Florence to Venice, overnight in Venice and take the 8:30 train through Austria to Munich and hook into the fast rail service from there to Paris.
