Scenic train route salzburg to bellagio, lake como

We will be traveling with two teenage grand daughters from Salzburg to Bellago,Lake Como by train in June. Any ideas on the most scenic route? We will want to break up the trip by spending the night somewhere along the way.
Thanks, Kathleen

You'll have to go from Salzburg to Innsbruck (115 miles) and transfer trains. From Innsbruck, it's about a 6 hour trip. You'll have to transfer trains at Verona and Milan to get up to Lecco. Bellagio has no train station, and the only way to get there is by boat since it's landlocked. The other option is to take the train west to Munich and fly on Lufthansa Regional Airlines down to Milan Malpensa. There you'd have to catch a train from the airport into Milan and transfer trains up to Lecco. That takes 2 hrs. Since there are no roads or trains going into Bellagio, it's just a difficult place to get to.

I wouldn't go either of those ways. You can do a nice scenic trip on the Bernina Esxpress route, the most scenic of Switzerland's "scenic train" journeys. Here's how: Salzburg to Sargans (4.5 hours). Change there for Chur (about 20 minute ride). From Chur, ride to Samedan or Pontresina to spend the night in a beautiful alpine place. Next day, take the train to Tirano (you may have to wait until afternoon to find a train rather than bus connection). At Tirano, change for the train to Varenna. At Varenna, catch a ferry to Bellagio.
