For those who have done it, how scenic is the train ride from FRA to AMS.?
Trying to choose between non-stop flight SEA- FRA and train to AMS,
OR
Itinerary that is 3 flight segments (SEA -DTW -PHL- AMS)

I would characterize the high speed Thalys, Paris to Amsterdam, as pleasant, comfortable, efficient. It's about 3 hours. Of course you have to get from the airport to Gare du Nord to catch the train. Scenic? Depends on what you mean. It is flat country, no soaring mountains or rushing rivers. If you choose first class, you get a meal and wine. I would certainly take it over a 3 segment flight.
Question: There is a non stop flight, SeaTac to Amsterdam on Delta. Why the 3 leg journey?
The trip from Frankfurt airport to Amsterdam along the Rhine is very scenic until you get to Bonn, then not so much as you go through the industrial area to the Dutch border, into Amsterdam some nice canal side runs. You have to specify "via Koblenz" or you will get routed on the new high speed line from Frankfurt to Cologne which runs much of the way in the median of the Autobahn. That would be on a direct ICE. Fast, but not very scenic. Going along the Rhine you will have to change trains, probably in Mainz and Cologne. Maybe stop over in Cologne for a couple of hours to see the cathedral, which is right next to Cologne Hbf.
Not very scenic except for the view of the massive Cologne Cathedral
Kateja-- using FF miles, so that not one of the choices :-(
Sam-- thank you for the info---was looking at a direct ( ICE) train to not have to deal with changing trains, while still 'on the go' following an overnight flight. ( using the FF miles reduces flexibility in choosing the ideal flight schedule)
Don't you just love FF miles. I spent 10 years accumulating enough miles for a "free" round-trip flight to Germany, and then I still had to pay hundreds of dollars to get it. And then I only got to fly one way on Lufthansa and had to come back on (Yuck) United, and through Dulles, which was almost a disaster.
In 2014 I did the route Frankfurt Hbf to Amsterdam Centraal on the ICE direct as a day trip; it depends on what you find is interesting. Interesting was the marked difference once you cross the border, the contrast. I am glad I did on the ICE
Thank you all
Decided to do the flight to AMS --- used the FF miles to get biz class so will use the lounge in PHL, rather than an evening train to AMS
