We will be renting a car in Treviso and planning to spend 6 days in the Dolomites before returning the car to Venice(Mestre) and heading back home. I'm looking for recommendations of routes to take. We have no specific plans and no reservations. We pick up the car on Sept 25 so I think we're far enough into the shoulder season to allow spontaneity. We would like to do as much hiking as possible and maybe have 2 bases where we stay 3 nights each but we are open to anything. I've seen some suggestions of roads to take but only referenced by name not number so I couldn't find them on maps. Thanks for any help.
Using "Google Maps - Get Directions" add the following destinations in successive order, you will get your dream itinerary. Break a trip in a few (3) segments for the 6 days. Sleep a couple of nights in the Dolomites (I like the Val Gardena, i.e. Ortisei), maybe one or two in Merano and a couple of nights on the Lake Garda. You can do this trip in any direction you wish. TREVISO CORTINA D'AMPEZZO ORTISEI/CASTELROTTO CANAZEI VIGO DI FASSA MERANO MADONNA DI CAMPIGLIO RIVA DEL GARDA LIMONE SUL GARDA SIRMIONE VERONA
VENEZIA
Cortina is a great base for 2-3 days if you are looking for hiking opportunities. A really great day trip from there is to drive to Passo Falzarego and take the cable car up to Rifugio Monte Lagazuoi (you could even spend the night there). The views are stunning and it is in the midst of extensive fortifications from WWI. The mountain is honeycombed with tunnels and you can actually take them back to the bottom. http://rifugiolagazuoi.com/indexUK.php
Hi Teri, Gardena Pass - SS 243 Between Selva/Wolkenstein and Colfosco. Sella Pass - SS 242 Between Selva/Wolkenstein and Canazei, more or less. Pordoi Pass - SS 48 Between Canazei and Arabba
Giau Pass - SP 638 These passes are all between Cortina d' Ampezzo (in the east) and the Val Gardena (to the west). To see a map of this online: Go to - www.viamichelin.com Under "Find your map" type in: 39046 Ortisei, Italy Instant map with the passes named and numbered. My opinion, with 6 nights, spend 3 in the Alta Badia and another 3 either in the Val Gardena or just west of Meran/Merano in the Vinschgau/Val Venosta. You could base all 6 nights in 1 location, as the area between Cortina d'Ampezzo and Val Gardena realy isn't that far for day trips. The Alta Badia would put you in between these two locations. We loved our stays at the Ciasa Montanara in La Villa, Alta Badia. www.montanara.it Our photo's are at: http://www.worldisround.com/articles/355539/index.html http://www.worldisround.com/articles/324504/index.html http://www.worldisround.com/articles/343800/index.html http://www.worldisround.com/articles/351565/index.html Paul
