Hello,
My husband and I will be flying SAS Premium economy to Germany with a layover at Copenhagen. With premium we are permitted to have 2 carry-ons and we just received our ordered cases. We ordered the one TravelPro International size carry on and then the Max Lite5 TravelPro weekend companion. The size of the companion is 14.75x19x9 and SAS requirements is 21.6x15.7x9. My question is do you think I will get called out for the size difference in the width? Will they be strict with it or will it be ok?
It’s always a gamble when your bag size doesn’t meet the airline’s requirements.
I agree with Margie. There's always a risk when you have a carry-on, but I will say that if you're in premium, your odds are a lot better than if you're in economy. I'd probably go for it. The worst thing that would happen is that you'd have to check it, and there might be a charge. But again, since you're in premium, your odds are better at getting it checked for free.
Is the weekend companion bag squishable?
Keep in mind it has to go under the seat. If I was checking my main luggage, I’d take a bag like that, but if trying to carry on two bags, I think it is too large.
Yes, the bag is a soft bag. I just realized that if I put the bag end on end, it is the same size as the actual carry on.
One other thing, Premium with SAS, I'm permitted 2 carry-on's and 1 personal item, and 2 checked bags. So, I guess worse case scenario they check it and since I get 2 checked, I won't pay for it.
You might want to check at the airline counter before you go to the gate just so there’s no hassle. If the bag is squishable it’s probably no problem but I wouldn’t want to just rely on what anyone of us tells you because it won’t have any influence with the airlines :-)
I must be stupid, because I don't see a problem. Your companion bag is smaller than the carry-on restriction. 19" is less than 21.6", 14.75" is less than 15.7".
So you are okay for your 2nd carry-on. It would be too large for a personal item. And as a 2nd carry-on, it does not have to fit under your seat.
Your personal item can be approximately 16 x 12 x 6".
Don't forget that the weight limit per carry-on is 8 kg, approximately 17.6 lbs.
Never a firm answer. For the most part, it is doubtful if anyone will say anything unless it is obviously overstuffed and too big ---- BUT -- I have also stood in more than one line where each bag was checked for size and weight. So you need a back up plan if the bag has to be checked. Some of it will depend on the attitude of the staff working that day. Good luck.
I've read your question over and over and I think I may see the problem.
You used the word "requirement" when talking about the SAS bag size of 21.6 x 25.7 x 9. Do you think your bag has to be that size?
No, those are the maximum dimensions of each carry on bag. Anything smaller is fine.
But remember, each bag can't be more than 8 kg (17.6 lbs including the bag.)
I guess I agree with jeanm. 14.75x19x9 is the same as 19x14.75x9, just from a different perspective.
But I'm kind of confused by your saying you've ordered one TravelPro Intenational size carry-on and then the weekend companionj. Is that two carry-ons, total, for both of you, or for each of you (4 bags total)? The companion, at 19x14.75x9 is 2522 cu in. That should be enough for one person. How big is the International carry-on? I can't find either one on the TravelPro website.
FWIW - I traveled on SAS (domestic within Europe) with the Maxlite 5 Carry-On Spinner and was not questioned about size. And I was flying regular Economy. But I know this is a tidy bit larger for European requirements but never an issue in the US. If they had made me check, I think my ticket had 1 checked bag allowance that I didn't use, so I assume wouldn't have to pay for it.
It would not fly on low cost airlines where they have you place bag in measurement box.

measurement box.
"It"? What is "it"? Do you mean your bag could not fly because it's oversized?
Or did you mean to say "I"?
Why?
Answering to Lee:
Sorry, I meant "it" as the bag would not fly, i.e., would not be accepted as carry-on in low cost airlines.
Let me try again.
I never had a problem with the size of my Maxlite TravelPro spinner as a carry-on. But I didn't fly low-cost airlines. I believe the bag would not fly as a carry-on with a low cost airlines (because they would require it to fit in measuring box) and it (the bag) would need to be checked.
