What is the most convenient way to get from downtown San Sebastian to the French TGV station in Hendaye?
From http://www.seat61.com/Spain.htm#London to San Sebastian : Travel from San Sebastian to Hendaye by narrow gauge train run by Euskotren. These run every 30 minutes from Sebastian Amara station to Hendaye, journey time 37 minutes. At Hendaye, the Euskotren station is across the forecourt from the main SNCF station. Always allow plenty of time for the connections! You'll find the Euskotren stations branded Metro Donostialdea.
Buses run twice daily from Donastia San Sebastian to Biarritz. However, the arrival is in downtown Biarritz and the SNCF station is on the outskirts, requiring either a taxi or public bus ride. http://www.pesa.net/pesa/horariosBD/ctrl_horarios.php The narrow-guage Euskotrain runs across the border and its station is adjacent to the SNCF terminal. However, its website is in two languages, neither English. http://www.euskotren.es/ Here's a map which includes Bilbao. It looks like what it is, municipal transport on rails. I expect you could check it out once you are in San Sebastian. http://gospain.about.com/od/traintravelinspain/ig/Spain-Metro-Maps/Bilbao-Tram-Map.htm
This awkward inter-city rail connection is one of many symptoms of the Basque region's history of estranged relations with both Madrid and, to a lesser extent, Paris.
> However, its website is in two languages, neither English. http://www.euskotren.es/ I use the Google Chrome web browser for this kind of situation. It has a translator feature which works very well. I had no problems with the Spanish version of the site, but I didn't try the Euskadi (Basque language) version...
Kevin, thanks a bunch! Donna
