We are staying at a timeshare near Salzburg. Is Vienna a reasonable day trip? Would you recommend a train or a car for this journey? What are the must-sees along the route?
The trip takes three hours by train. Only you can decide if six hours of travel time is worth it for a partial day in Vienna. The standard 2nd class fare is €49.90. However, if you book well in advance on the Austrian Rail site, you can get a SparSchiene fare as low as €19.00. SparSchiene tickets are for a specific departure date and time and are non-exchangeable and non-refundable.
I don't know how long your timeshare stay will be, but you could spend a night in Vienna...then return to your timeshare. I won't tell ;-) Or, if you're spending time elsewhere before and/or after your timeshare stay, it might make sense to see Vienna then. But then you've probably already thought of that!
Sounds like we will skip Vienna. We will be traveling from Italy and after Austria to Germany so too many train rides for our kids. Thanks.
