I've tried to purchase tickets online from Salzburg Austria to Trento Italy. The only site and tickets I have found was raileurope.com for $180.00 for two tickets. Is there any other sites that I could look at or am I better off making the purchase at the train station in Salzburg?
Hi Angel,
Since you are departing from Austria, you would have to book it through the Austrian Rail website, which is http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp. When you are in a European rail station, you can book from any rail station for pretty well any trip in Europe... but online bookings must be done from the website for the country of origin. They offer you the ability to call or book tickets by email. Just look up the trip that you want and then click on "Ticket and Prices", where you will then get the email option.
RailEurope is usually not a good place to get point-point tickets for Europe, because they only offer the most expensive fares, not the discount fares.
Freilassing is the first station in Germany, just over the border from Salzburg, on the way to Innsbruck. The fare to Freilassing is only a few Euro. IF you can commit to a specific date and time, you can get a Europa-Spezial Italien ticket for two from Freilassing to Trento for €86 ($121.26 at $1.41/€) including seat reservations. That would be taking a regional train to Rosenheim and catching the EC over Brenner Pass to Trento.
These tickets are available on the German Rail website. They are train-specific, non-exchangeable, non-refundable, but they do give a considerable savings if you can commit.
Those tickets would be mailed to you for €3,50, not the $18 RE charges.
