With help from several of you, have figured out that is quite easy to take a shuttle bus from Vnukovo airport to the Metro and then take two trains to our hotel. We will be travelling around 4pm and my husband's main conern now is that, with our backpacks, we will be targets for any crime. Any experience please? We have never had problems and basically find people everywhere are honest.
Unless you find yourself in any shady, secluded alleyways, you won't get mugged or anything. While not many people past school age carry backpacks, it doesn't mean you'll be a crime target.
That said, just keep aware of your posessions while going in/out of the Metro and on the trains. I'm from Moscow, and I have never bothered with any kind of extra security devices whenever I went back. My purse was never slashed or broken into. Just keep your bag where you can see it.
You should be fine. I traveled the Metro in Moscow anywhere from 8AM to 11PM and never felt unsafe.
As an FYI, if you are planning on using the metro during rush hour, avoid the ring line, as it is JAMMED packed and you will have extreme difficulty with luggage.
If you want any more Moscow info, PM me, I'm glad to help.
