S-Bahn in Salzburg?

We are wanting to take the Salzburg S-Bahn from Hauptbahnhof to Oberndorf (for the Silent Night memorial on Christmas Eve). Is this a good transportation option? How does one buy a ticket? Approximately what does it cost? We're having trouble locating this information on line. Thanks!

First thing, which Oberndorf are we talking about? The closest Oberndorf to Salzburg is call Oberndorf bei Salzburg and looks like it is near the German border roughly north of Salzburg. There is another Oberndorf (in Tirol) near Kitzbuhel). The S-Bahn takes you to Oberndorf b. Salzburg in about 25 min. The connection is shown on the oebb website but it's local, so oebb doesn't show the fare. I'll have to find it on the website for local traffic in Salzburg. The other question will be how often/late it runs on Christmas eve. Currently, the Austrian Rail website, along with a lot of other European rail websites, only has the schedule loaded through Dec 10. We'll have to wait for the next schedule upload to see about Dec 24.. On Dec. 9, the S-Bahn back to Salzburg runs every half hour until 11:19 PM. It looks like the tariff is 4 zones for €4 /P each way. The Lokalbahn Bahnhof is located under the regular tracks in the Salzburg Hbf. You can get to it by going down escalators between the bus slips in Südtirolerplatz in front of the Hbf. I imagine any ticket automat in the Hbf will sell you Lokalbahn tickets. There is a ticket automat in the Lokalbahn Bahnhof. If you can read them, the schedules are at http://www.salzburg-ag.at/fileadmin/user_upload/verkehr/lokalbahn/Fahrplan_S1_S11_2011.pdf.

Lee, Thanks so much for all of this great information! We are going to the Oberndorf that's near Salzburg. I will watch the Austrian Rail site for updates as we get closer to the date. Thanks again! :-) Amy
