Went to REI yesterday and was told that the discount European airlines measure bags differently--i.e. we dont include wheels, they do. Any suggestions on a bag to buy--i do not want to pay to check my bag. the bags at the rick steves store look good---but seem to include a caveat that they might not fit the requirements of 55x40x20cm that Ryannair requires???
The 21" and 22" wheeled bags probably will not fit into the "box." I am looking for a 19" bag that has adequate room. In my experience, it is cheaper to pay the "check baggage" fee when buying your ticket. If you wait until checking-in, you will be sent to another desk and be required to pay double the on-line fee. That was Easyjet, but Ryanair may be similar.
"we dont include wheels, they do" I don't know if they include wheels, but US airlines do. I checked four US airlines that fly to Europe, and no one explicitly said the don't include wheels. At least one airline had a drawing showing the dimension and the leaders definitely included the wheels. American Airline included this statement, "Baggage must fit easily in the Carry-on Baggage Check, which is located near the check-in counters and at the gate and is approximately 22" x 14" x 9". I don't know of any way that you could make a "check box" that would allow all wheels to hang out and not be included. The one used by Lufthansa on flights to/from this country definitely includes wheels. And, thinking of it logically, why would the airline care about the volume of clothes you could carry? They care about the overall dimensions because they care whether it will fit in the overhead compartment. But, that said, I've seen some obviously oversized luggage go on without anyone checking it. On my last trip back from Germany, they let someone bring on a rollaboard so big that even sideways he had to force it in and force the door shut. When we arrived in Chicago, he couldn't get the door open.
Kristen, Ryan Air can be real sticklers about carry-on size. I don't want to even tell you about the problem that I encountered when my returning bag was overweight! (wife had it packed with her "finds"!) Check your bag! It is cheap. Also, they limit you to ONE "carry on"...not a carry on and a personal item like a purse. One thing ONLY! Go to their website and read their rules closely!
kristen, One other point to be concerned with is the weight of your carry-on luggage. They may not always check, but if they do and you're over the limit, YOU'LL PAY! As you've probably noted, the current rules are: Strictly one item of cabin baggage per passenger (excluding infants) weighing up to 10kg with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm is permitted. (handbag, briefcase, laptop, shop purchases, camera etc.) must be carried in your 1 permitted piece of cabin baggage. Hopefully you'll be able to keep your travel kit under 22 lbs.
I am with steve, size is the keast of your issues, weight is more likely to cost you than size. Pay for the checked bag, no way can you keep all of your items you bring under 22 lbs.
