Ryanair to Charge 40 GBP is you check in at the ariport

Ryanair has done away with all its check in counters and will charge 40 GBP to any customer who forgets to check in online. They claim it's the fee to reissue the ticket but also say it will save the 50 million GBP a year. Now, every passenger has to pay to check in.

The UK fair standards people are looking into this claiming you have paid for a ticket which is a valid contract of carriage. Except, now, the airline wants to charge you extra to carry out that contract. It may be illegal.

EasyJet and Air Berlin said they will keep their check in desks.

Ryan Air has been charging 40GBP to anyone who does not check in online, even when the check in counters existed.

It is commonly thought to be the worst of the budget airlines - a view I would subscribe to. Once and never again, hopefully.

£40 is $64 at todays exchange rate. You can fly to a lot of places in the U.S. for $64.

The online check-in fee, according to the RyanAir website, is £5 ($8) or €5 ($7+). I don't know if they will only accept local currency (£ in UK) or if you could choose to pay in Euro. And, do they add the checkin fee to your tab, or, assuming they've already processed that part, charge you a new £5/€5 card processing fee for the online checkin?

Note that online checkin can only be done the earliest 151 days prior to your flight. If it is too soon to do it online from here, then you will have to find a computer/printer somewhere over there.

BTW, a complete listing of the fees charged by Ryan can be seen here.

  1. The website is contradictory. In one place it says 21 days but on the online checkin page it says 15 days.
