Ryanair Question

First, I want to say that I did search through the Google Advanced Search for this question but did not find it. So, I'm asking it although it does seem silly to me too!

I'm visiting a friend in Ireland and flying Ryanair from London. I am not checking baggage and have my backpack packed (in accordance with the rules). I would like to take a children's book to my friends son but it will not fit in my backpack without getting torn up. So, to the question, can I carry the book on or will they consider it a 2nd carry on? I know this seems silly but I want to stick to the rules and if I must I can mail the book!! Thanks!

I think even he anal retentive folks at Ryan Air will let this one pass. Everyone carries on reading material. I assume this isn't some 2 inch thick "children's book".

:) Nah, just a small one! Thanks! I assumed as much, just wanted to make sure.

Kris, though RyanAir are pretty pedantic, they seem to allow duty free shopping as a second carry-on, so a book shold not be an issue.

Kris,
I'm flying from Dublin to Newcastle, England, visiting a friend who just had a baby... I didn't think my gift for the baby would be a 2nd item. as my gift is a doll and won't fit in my pack.

Thanks for bringing that point up!

The old "book-in-the-coat" trick works every time too.
