Ryanair language test?

Ryanair is requiring all South African nationals to complete a test in Afrikaans proving they know the language or they will be denied boarding. They say it is to combat passport fraud. The problem is only 13.5% of the population speaks Afrikaans and it was the language used by whites during apartheid. The airline is being accused of racism.

Ryanair is known for its publicity stunts. If this is one of them, it's a bad one.

I don’t know how serious an issue passport fraud is in South Africa, but it’s the airline that gets a hefty fine if passengers are travelling illegally. Presumably they have been stung for fines.

Presumably they have been stung for fines. & I don't think that RyanAir thought this one all the way through.

I think Jennifer and Pam collectively have correctly assessed the situation.

In the world of airline absurdity and incompetence, this ranks as one of the stupidest things I have seen.
