Hi all, Anyone flown Ryan Air before? A slightly overwhelming and anxiety-provoking online booking experience to say the least! So many little fees(but definitely a great deal. Flying Dublin to Milan Bergamo for $15). Aside from making sure I print the boarding passes prior to our flight, anyone else have pointers or other things I need to do to make sure I'm not charged even more?? (Also, is RyanAir's Dublin airport the main airport? Because Milan Bergamo is definitely Milan's main airport, I just discovered!) cheers, Liz
"Milan Bergamo is definitely Milan's main airport" Did you leave the word NOT out of that sentence? Malpensa is Milan's main airport. There is rail tranportation from Malpensa to downtown Milan. Bergamo airport is "accessible" by bus to Bergamo station (15 min), followed by a 45 min train ride from there to Milan.
Make sure you really understand their baggage policy and weight limits. Carryon requirements are tough to meet. If you check a bag and don't prepay for the correct weight, they hit you with a large fee.
OH, whoops! Yes, I did forget the NOT in that sentence. Yes, Bergamo is NOT the main airport.
In addition to Lee's method of getting from Bergamo Airport (BGY) to Milan, there are direct buses (several per hour) from the airport direct to Milan Central Station. Even though it is a "different city," BGY is almost as "close" to Milan as Malpensa is. Linate is Milan's close airport; the other two are about an hour away by road, in almost opposite directions. In other words, unless you could have snagged a flight into LIN, BGY is almost as convenient as MXP.
When RyanAir says One Carry-on, they mean 1 bag only. So, make sure your purse or camera bag fits inside of your one carry-on and that this carry-on fits into their measuring rack and does not weigh more than 10 kg.
My kids say they will never fly Ryan Air again. They are constantly canceling flights ,which they did to my kids from London to Dublin , causing them to miss their tour. I hear they are very unreliable !
Ryan Air can be a good deal, but I look at a 15 euro ticket as being closer to 80 euro with fees and a checked bag...still a good deal. If you did not opt for a checked bag, seriously consider doing so, to try and make the normal carry-on "light" packing meet their carry-on requirements is very difficult. I nearly always pay to check a bag, and make sure it is in the limits. Ryanair uses the main Dublin airport, and no, Bergamo is not the main Milan airport, but as someone said, it is no further or more difficult to get to than Malpensa, and probably much less crowded. As for the comment on cancelled flights, I have flown Ryanair maybe 8 times over the years and never had a cancelled or even late flight and do not recall seeing any, but that is only my experience.
Suzanne's kids had bad luck about their flight being cancelled, because I've flown Ryanair for 10 years now, out of Frankfurt Hahn and Pisa Italy and have never had a flight cancelled, tho now I do remember my friend had hers cancelled from Pisa to FH. But...they're usually on time, even touching down early. Like Jo said, they're stringent about size/weight of bags (most of the time, sometimes not so much but you never know so you better have it right), you'll feel like a cow standing in line, but they are cheap!
I am from the States but have been living and working over here in Europe for the last few years. I frequently fly with Ryanair. Yes, the extra fees do add up but you can still get some really good deals with them. Travel light. Remember their one carry-on rule is strict and for women even your purse needs to go into your one carry-on. I have only had one delayed flight with them. Their seats are rigid, you cannot recline them at all. Not very comfortable in my opinion but tolerable for a short hop and doable for a few hours. Non European Union passengers must get their passports verified first and an agent will stamp your boarding pass usually prior to going through to the gate. Some places have floor agents that can do that without you having to stand in their long lines of people trying to check bags. If you are non EU don't forget to do that. They try to sell lots of products during the flights. Also, at the gates people line up early. Since there are no assigned seats its first come first served and they want to be on the plane quickly. It's often been my experience that they open both the front and rear cabin doors for boarding and deplaning. Don't know how much time you have in Italy but Bergamo is worth exploring.
Thanks everyone! These comments are so helpful!
