Ryan Air from Frankfurt to Stockhom-Need Advice

Hi, my wife and I are going to europe next summer. i've been a few times and can communicate somewhat effectively in a few languages. However, after reading some reviews I am nervous about using ryanair, but feel flying is the best way to make the most of our trip due to the distances between our destinations and length of time we have.

My 1st question:

If I take a train to frankfurt, and want to fly from there to stockholm, how long is the taxi/bus ride from frankfurt's train station to their ryanair airport of hahn? also, how far in advance should i arrive at the frankfurt airport to ensure we dont miss the flight? we will have one small carry-on each. (we are american so i assume we must wait in line w/o an EU pp).

Next question: I will take another ryanair flight from stockholm to pisa. how far out is this pisa airport from pisa's central train station?

i would really appreciate any good solid advice you can send my way. i plan to be well prepared so if you have had a bad experience just because you weren't prepared, please dont respond. and feel free to email me your response,

Thank you so much!

Ok, first of all, I think you should edit your post and remove your personal email address. People can send you private messages through the PM service here. Every time you sign on, you will see if you have messages. This is more secure for you.

Onto Ryan Air and Frankfurt. Ryan Air lands in Hahn, which they like to call Frankfurt Hahn. It is 120 km. from Frankfurt and therefore you will not want to take a taxi there. There is a regular bus service that costs 12 euro per person and takes about 1.5 hours. If you go onto the Ryan Air website, they will show you where each of their airports are and will also give you the information about how to get into the city centers from those airports. I would plan on being at Hahn around 2 hours before hand. You must do on-line check in with them or pay a fee, luggage is limited, you are charged with many fees, so please read the website carefully.

A lot of people who are not prepared for Ryan Air have bad experiences and others who do know what they are doing have been perfectly satisfied. There are several threads talking about just this theme if you look at the different forums on here.

Question #1--Please understand that Frankfurt Hahn airport is not near Frankfurt. It would be like calling the Gainesville Airport--"Jacksonville-Gainesville" airport.

Here's a link to info about the Frankfurt-Hahn Airport:

Frankfurt Hahn Airport

The bus from Frankfurt Train Station to Frankfurt Hahn airport takes about an hour and 45 minuttes.

Make sure you read Ryanair's website very carefully about printing boarding passes, checking in, baggage, etc. They are very strict and give no leeway. As long as you know the rules, you'll be fine. (See today's NY Times.)

Ryanair now insists everyone prints out their boarding passes before getting to the airport. You don't wait online anymore.

Question #2--Pisa airport is actually fairly close to Pisa as you'll see from the aiport's website--Pisa International Airport

There is a shuttle train that runs every 30 minutes from the Pisa Airport to Pisa's Main Rail Station. The trip takes about....5 to 10 minutes depending on the time of day.

Thank you for the fast advice!

Can you buy bus tickets to Frankfurt Hahn in the Frankfurt train station? Where?

Hi, Matt. Ryanair usually states on their website that you have to be there at least 40 mins before if you wind up with checked luggage, or forgot to print your boarding passes, so it would be a good idea to allow for that, plus security, and the checkin line. They close the gate 20 mins before the flight, and recommend being at the gate 30 mins before.

They do tend to change rules at time, so check the faq above before you go! :) If you know their rules, you should have a great trip.

FYI - I found the preboarding for a couple extra Euros worth it.

They have schedules for the buses at the Main train station, but you buy your ticket from the bus driver. I would look up the schedules now though, in case you arrive at a time when the tourist bureau is closed.

Ryanair flies into Stockholm's Skavsta Airport, not Arlanda, Stockholm's main airport. The bus trip from Skavsta to Stockholm is 1:10. The bus ride from Arlanda is 40 minutes.

While your flights are nearly a year away, also check out SAS which flies between Frankfurt (the main airport, not Hahn) and Stockholm (main airport). So does Lufthansa but they seem to be very expensive.

Figure out what the entire cost is of flying Ryanair, including all the "extras" like getting to and from the airports, and then compare to the other airlines.

As an example, I plugged in July 1 and got a fare of $72 on SAS.

Here's a link to Skavsta Airport

I could not find any other airline that flies nonstop from Stockholm to Pisa other than Ryanair.

Matt, when you fly into Pisa, there's a rail station right there at the airport. The airport is very small. You can take a train from there to Pisa Centrale, probably 15 minutes long. Pisa is easy compared to some other places!
