Ryan Air checked baggage guidelines

I am going on a two-week trip to Europe in a few days, and I will be flying on Ryan Air from Newcastle to Barcelona. I was just looking at their baggage restrictions for carry-ons, and my bag that I have is 2.9 cm too high. It fits the size restrictions for length and width. Will this be a big deal-- how strict are they in enforcing size of carry-ons? Is it more important to be under the weight requirement?

They will put it in one of those racks to see if it fits. If it doesn't, they make you pay quite a hefty fee to then check it. Also, when they say one bag, they mean one bag. So make sure your purse or camera will also fit in this bag. You might want to purchase the right size bag, preferably something softer, so that it fits in the sizing container.

Megan, I've found RyanAir to be very strict with luggage limits, so it would be a really good idea to pack light! If not you'll be "nicked" with a hefty "overweight" charge. As someone else mentioned, European airlines often only allow one carry-on item. That doesn't mean "one plus a personal item such as a Purse", it means ONE ONLY of the approved size and weight (and they'll probably check). RyanAir seems to have more extra charges than some of their competitors. This is the airline that was proposing to charge passengers €1 each time they use the washroom during flight. You'll probably be arriving at Girona, which is about 100 kM from the city of Barcelona, and the Bus trip will add about 2-hours. Should you need to make that flight again, I'd suggest having a look at EasyJet, as they offer flights from Newcastle to Barcelona (BCN is only about 10 kM from the city, so a much easier trip). Happy travels!

Last summer while killing time waiting for a Ryan Air flight I watch 2 young women taking clothes out of their bags and putting them on (about 4 layers worth) then attempting to sit on their bags to try to close and lock them with not a lot of success, yes they take the restrictions seriously!

My experience with baggage enforcement by Ryanair is that it can vary by airport/country. In England, they tend to be very strict, check everything. In Germany, a little looser, basically a gate attendant scanned the crowd and pulled suspicious looking bags over for a check. In Croatia, there were very few checks, and many obviously over limit bags. Problem is, you do not know, so stick with the limits. I almost always pay for a checked bag, cheap insurance I figure.

The Ryanair "bag police" are very strict in Spain. The "one piece" rule regarding carry-on luggage (bag/purse/book/magazine/camera) is strictly enforced. However, they have not yet come up with a rule regarding how many pockets there are in your coat!

You have to assume they'll be strict, even though sometimes they aren't. A couple times in Ireland they haven't weighed my bags (which I knew were overweight). I thought it was because I have an Irish last name, until my wife pointed out that 90% of the people boarding in Dublin have an Irish last name.

I too have a question: my husband and I have Rick Steve suitcases (the type with wheels) and although these DO pass muster on Easyjet (just barely, and only if one has carefully packed so that the suitcase doesn't bulge) I wonder if the pass muster on Ryanair. Does anyone know?

Ryanair is renowned for ways to extract money from fliers. The only way you will know if your bag fits is when you are at the airport and the Ryan Air folks look at it in the measuring box and say OK or take it and €60 to put it in the hold.

Read and reread the exact size requirements for today on their website and make sure that your bag is well within those requirements - in all dimensions, not all but one. They will gig you.

And keep checking back on the website. It has been known for Ryan Air to "adjust" sizes.
