Route that makes the most sense-flying in/out of Roma

Hello, My husband and I are going to Italy next week and want to create a route that makes the most sense. We fly into Rome. My plan is to then head up to Tuscany/Florence (there we might rent a car to see the hillside towns). Then our next two big destinations are the Cinque Terra (West) and Venice (East). We'll need to get back to Rome to fly out. I don't plan on having the car other than just the hillside towns, so we'd be either coming back from the Cinque Terra or Venice via train. Are there more worthwhile stops going one route over another? Appreciate any advice. Thanks! Also, if anyone knows the best place to get last minute deals on AVAILABLE accomodations, that would be great.

Jenny, there are high speed trains on Roma-Firenze (1h20) and Roma-Venezia (3h40) route, so it would be a no-brains to choose any other option. From any major station in Toscana do the Cinque Terre you should have no problem using a regional train (up to 2h depending on your stating point). From Cinque Terre to Venezia you get back to Firenze and take a fast train to Venezia. If you want a half-day very worthwhile stop, do it at Bologna on your way in or out to Venezia (high speed trains will call there anyway, but you must buy separate tickets as you can't hop off your train in Bologna and just catch another one later with the same ticket).

I just forgot about the latter question: you can always check Booking.com and Venere.com. They have extensive hotel coverage in Italy, showing only available places if you filter them.

CORRECTION TO MY QUESTION (that's what I get for staying up late). What I meant to ask is: We'd either be going back to Rome from the Cinque Terra or Venice via public transportation. Sorry for the confusion!!! Thanks so much for your reply-very helpful! =-) BTW-I edited my original question.
