Round trip fare vs. one way

It appears on Trenitalia website that the cost of a R/T ticket (Rome to Venice) is the same as a one way to same. Is that true? If so, can I stop for a day or two in Florence on way back to Rome?

I think you must be just looking at the first half of a round-trip ticket. The website has you choose that before showing you fares for the return.

For train travel in Italy there is no such thing as a round trip ticket. You must buy two one-way tickets.

High-speed EuroStar Italia trains like the ones running between Venice and Rome require seat reservations and tickets are only good for a specific departure date and time. If you wish to stop in Florence, you will need to buy separate tickets for Venice-Florence and Florence-Rome.

Train fares in Italy are based on kilometers traveled, so it should cost only slightly more to buy 2 tickets (Rome-Florence and Florence-Venice) than to buy one Rome-Venice ticket. For maximum flexibility for your time in Florence, you can buy your 2nd ticket at the train station when you're ready to leave for Venice.

There are tickets you can buy in Italy that will let you stop along the same route at no extra charge. Lee on here could probably give a full explanation.

I think their mostly for the slower trains though. Anybody?

What about the discounts for early booking? Worth while if you are sure of itinerary?
Is first class worth extra in late May, 1st week of June? Is it crowded then? How hot?
