Does anyone have suggestions on the best airline to purchase such tickets? My son, husband, and I are starting to research this and am wondering if anyone has had any bad experiences with restrictions.

You need a rough plan and then make sure the airline goes where you want to go. I have known two people who used round the world ticket -- United and American and it worked fine.

It is highly dependent on where you want to go, how many spots you want to make, whether you want to backtrack, and whether you want to stop at a place more than once.
