Rookie international travel snafu averted

Heads up to other rookie travelers: check your airline confirmation well before your departure.

I booked our tickets for our April trip to Barcelona back in August when prices were particularly good. The flight is not direct and we are scheduled to make one connection. I'd learned my lesson on an earlier trip to book all legs with one airline so I booked through on Lufthansa and was feeling pretty comfortable. However, all was not well when I checked online today. About 5 weeks out, one leg of our trip was canceled! Red letter notice of cancellation on the airline website was a little scary, I have to admit. When I called the number provided, the first 'travel specialist' assured me that the trip was whole, but he could not explain why it did not show up on my itinerary. Sent me two additional emails with flight information, none showing the missing leg. Baffled, he told me I would have to talk with Air Canada, the 'travel partner' airline, who was actually managing the flight, if I wanted a confirmation. This seemed really crazy to me, since I had booked with Lufthansa, but I figured I would jump through the hoop. Wait time for the Air Canada call was over 30 minutes and the agent there said, as I expected him to, that since I'd booked with Lufthansa, Air Canada couldn't resolve the issue. Back to Lufthansa and a very efficient, friendly agent who straightened up the situation in about 5 minutes. Wish I had gotten him the first time! So glad that I checked a month out instead of the night before - or worse, at the airport! I may not have saved any headaches, but at least I have time to recover before our trip. I shudder to think what the situation at the airport might have been trying to straighten this out during the trip. Whew!

Sounds like you did the right thing!

I learned a long time ago to start checking my air reservations about 3 months before the flight. The closer I get to the flight, the more frequently I check the reservation which can change without any email to notify you.

Long story short - always check you reservations before you're scheduled to depart. And if the first person who answers the phone can't help you, hang up and call again.

worth signing up for alerts on your phone as well as email alerts, some companies are very good at doing this some not but always better having too much info than none at all.You did the right thing checking you flight status well in advance so you can deal with problems without having to go into panic mode.

We were booking with another couple to Poland with Lufthansa. 5 minutes after booking we were checking with them and one of our connecting flights was wrong. Right day, wrong time. Anyway - we called Lufthansa immediately, they said we had to cancel and rebook, it was within the 24 hour time period. My husband called back, got a different agent, 1,2,3 he fixed the problem. Always call back, 2, 3 or even more times till you get someone willing to help. A tip I always try to pass along.

Great advice Barbara. Nowadays, I usually book my American "award" travel online, but when I do need to speak to someone, it can take me a few times to connect with someone helpful. I just say "I'm sorry, but I have to take another call" and redial.

I have an upcoming flight to France on Lufthansa which I booked several months ago. Twice I've received emails saying that there has been a change in the itinerary, and setting forth the new schedule. In both cases it was a matter of a few minutes. I don't know if I had signed up for email notifications, or whether Lufthansa does that as a matter of course. Since then I've been checking occasionally just to be sure.

Post Travel Update:
So now I know what the situation at the airport would have been had we found out at the last minute. Our original cancelled flight was rebooked on Lufthansa through Frankfurt. And the morning of our departure, THAT flight was cancelled due to a ground crew strike in Frankfurt. The night before I'd printed boarding passes, but checked in the morning 'just to be sure'. As I was looking at the airline's app the big red letters appeared: CANCELLED. I spent a frustrating two hours trying to get through to an agent only to be cut off during the middle of two conversations! Grrrrr. The friend who was taking us to the airport has a lot more international experience than we do so we took his advice and went ahead to the airport to 'talk to a face'. We actually got there a bit ahead of check-in time and waited only a few minutes before talking with an agent. Rebooked for the next day (darn it.) but with vouchers for meals and a hotel overnight. A couple international calls later the hotel agreed to hold our reservation with no charge for the night we missed and some prepaid tour fees were refunded. Another couple lessons learned: check the flight status the morning of and go see a person to get rebooked. International travel is certainly educational!
