What is a inexpensive but reliable way to travel between Rome (FCO) and the cruise port Civitavecchia?

There is an average of three trains/hour from Termini to Civitavecchia. Regional trains take about 1hr15min and the fare is 4.50€. ICplus trains take about 45min and the fare is 8.50€.

From the train station to the port entrance it is about a mile walk along the beach. When you exit the train station you will see your cruise ship off to the right. A one Euro (last summer) bus is available to the port entrance and a ship shuttle bus will take you to your ship's check in point. If you are good Rick Steves followers and packed light it is quicker to walk to the entrance because there is always a line for the bus and it is a small bus. Taxis are available but they do not like the short run.

If returning to Rome after the cruise, buy a RT ticket in Rome. When the ship docks the line to buy tickets to Rome will be impossible especially if more than one ship is docked. You will have to walk back to the station. There will be taxis at the port entrance but they want the long fare run back to Rome or the airport. And the line for the little bus will be hours long. We have made that run four times.
