Should we fly or take the train from Rome to Syracuse, Sicily?
I thought the train would let us see more of Italy because we would take it during the day but then I read it takes 12=14 hours and I don't know if I want to spend a whole day on the train.
Fly. You can make the whole trip in daylight.
If you can find a good airfare, fly direct from Rome to Catania and then take the train or a bus to Syracuse. I flew from Rome to Palermo, and the 45 minute flight was great compared to a very long train ride.
Only take the train if you want the experience of training down the coast & ferrying across to be an all-day part of your trip.
The flights take a little over an hour and there are some extremely cheap flights from Rome - Catania (bus from there down to Syracuse). I've seen prices as low as $27 on the budget airlines such as easyJet. Check out skyscanner.com for flights.
