Rome to Sorrento

I will be traveling back to Rome to celebrate December 8th with my sister, the Immaculate Conception is an amazing day to be in Rome with its celebrations and beautiful holiday decorations. Does anyone have insider tips on what to see if you have seen all of the traditional sites. This will be my third trip and I by the Spainish Steps which is amazing. Also, does anyone recommend a second location going South. I was looking at Sorrento as we could take the Freecia Rosa Train and use this as a home base to explore Naples/Pompei/Positanco. Thank You, Kathy

Yep, Sorrento is great, and makes a perfect base for day trips to many wonderful places. On a relatively short trip where you want to get a taste of that area (Amalfi Coast, Pompei, Capri, etc.) Sorrento is a no-brainer. We loved it there. You will definitely be amongst the Rick-nics and other expats but it's easy to see why people like the place.

Kathy, Sorrento is definitely a great place to visit, although I've never been there in December so not sure what it's like at that time of year. One point to clarify though. You will not be able take the Freccia trains all the way to Sorrento. You can travel from Rome to Naples via Freccia, but you'll then have to transfer to the Circumvesuviana commuter train from there to Sorrento. While travelling in Naples and on the Circumvesuviana, be sure to watch your luggage and wear Money Belts! For travel to Positano, Bus is the only option. Happy travels!
