Hello,
I'm looking for a train from Rome to Salerno because we want to go to Amalfi. Is there a train that stops in Pompei on the way? Tony
You can find the train schedules here: http://www.trenitalia.com/ If you go to Pompeii on the Trenitalia, you'll get off at the Trenitalia Pompei station, which is a 20-30 minute walk from the ruins (or a cab ride). Alternatively, you could take an express train from Rome to Naples, then switch to the local Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii. The Circumvesuviana stops right at the ruins. After Pompeii, you could either take the Circumvesuviana back to Naples & catch a train to Salerno - or you could take it on to Sorrento (its last stop), and catch a SITA bus from there directly to Amalfi. The Circumvesuviana schedule is here: http://www.vesuviana.it/ On the Trenitalia website, use the Italian spellings: Roma, Napoli, Pompei with a single "i".
If you take the Circumvesuviana, be sure to get off at the "Pompei Scavi" (Pompei excavations) stop, not the one for downtown Pompei (the modern city).
We did a return day trip by train to Pompei from Amalfi - caught the SITA bus from Amalfi to Salerno, train to Pompei Central. It's about a 20 minute walk from there to the ruins.
The Circumvesuviana doesn't go to the Pompei downtown station. Its only stop in Pompeii is at the ruins. The full name of the stop is "Pompei Scavi Villa Misteri." If you're interested, it also stops at Herculaneum. The stop is "Ercolano Scavi." Some people find Herculaneum even more interesting than Pompeii.
Thanks everyone
