Rome to Pisa from the San Pietro station

Our B&B is 300 meters from the San Pietro station in Rome. We have 1st class passes and want to travel from this station to Pisa rather than Termini which is 30 minutes away. Online (trenitalia) we see there are trains from here to Pisa on the schedule. 2 questions - would our eurail pass be valid here, and do we need to make a reservation? Thank you for any help with this!

Your pass is valid for the trains leaving from San Pietro, whether a reservation is needed will depend on what train you take. It appears that most itineraries from San Pietro take you to Civitavecchia on a Regional Train, which requires no reservations, then switching to either an Intercity train, requiring a small reservation fee, or a fast train with a little more of a fee.

Thank You for the information! If I understand how the reservation system works, we should be able to make that reservation at any of the stations, correct? And is it always best to book a few days ahead? This is new to us and we don't want to mess up.

I think you would be OK making a reservation immediately prior to getting on the train, the only danger would be a sold out train, which does not happen very often, but it would be prudent to stop when you are less rushed, maybe mid morning, after the commuter rush and go to a counter and make the reservation. For this, the day or two before would be fine. Many will make arrangements for leaving a city when they arrive.
