Rome to Nice

First, I'd like to say thank you for all the help you guys have given with my other questions! The last thing left to book is my transportation from Rome to Nice. Originally, I wanted to fly because it's an hour and I tend to get a little motion sickness when traveling for long periods of time. However, after extensive research and reading reviews, decided flying isn't actually worth it.. I'm not sure if it's a control thing but I'm terrified of losing my luggage while flying during this trip. At least on a train I can hold onto it or secure it near me. Rome to Nice is quite a train ride, so I'm trying to book an overnight train. However, after searching several sites (tgv-europe.com, raileurope.com, trenitalia.com) haven't been able to find anything. My only option seems to be Raileurope.com which has a night train leaving at 2300 and arriving in Nice at approx 1300, with a 3 hour or so layover in Milan. My date of departure would be 6/13/12. Any suggestions? Thanks again :)

Don't rely on Rail Europe. Their timetables are incomplete because they only show routes for which they sell tickets. The German Rail site has detailed timetables for virtually all of Europe. The site shows that you can take a night train with sleeping accommodations from Rome to Genoa, departing at 23:50 and arriving at 05:48. The rest of the route is Genoa-Ventimiglia-Nice, departing at 06:00 and arriving at 10:35. Do you think a European airline is more likely to lose your luggage than an airline that flies between the US and Europe? If so, I think your fears are unfounded. Blu-express and easyJet are budget airlines that fly directly from Rome Fiumicino to Nice. Booked well in advance, you can get a ticket for around $50 US.

Ali,, i think a on a direct flight they are less likely to lose your luggage, if you remove all the old tags( people tend to left a collection on which can cause confusion ) .. I respect your choice to train it, but it seems to me cheaper and faster to fly, and if luggage really is your only concern...... then you do realize luggage does go missing on trains occaisonally too, and not lost but stolen, you cannot always see your luggage , if your bag does not fit on the rack (if there is one, there in not always) that is overhead then you have to put it in the luggage storage area on the train. I choose my seats to be within view of said area, but thats not always possible either. You are not generally allowed to put it on seat next to you, but sometimes you can stick it on the floor beside you if seat is empty,, depends..
