Rome to Basel

We are new to traveling within Europe and need to get from Rome to Basel within two days Oct. 21-23, where we will catch a Viking Cruise. Anyone know our best, scenic, affordable option(s). Thanks for the help!!!!

I think train Rome - Milan - Zurich - Basel looks easy. Cheaper than a plane flight? Couldn't tell you. Wouldn't drive - too expensive.
