Depends what you mean by "best." Certainly, the cheapest and fastest is to fly. vueling and clickair, two Spanish discount airlines, fly Rome-Fiumicino-Barcelona. Both offer good deals if you book early enough...just watch baggage charges and weight limitations. Train journeys between the two cities can be long and arduous.

I went from Rome to Barcelona through Grimaldi Ferries. Grimaldi leaves from Civiticcia (sp?)--about a 30 minute train ride north of Rome. I traveled by myself, and a spot in a 4 person cabin cost 120 euro. I ended up having the entire cabin to myself. There was a cheaper option--a spot in a room full of recliners, but you had to share a bathroom. The ferry took 20 hours, but it was a nice way to end the trip. You arrive in Barcelona at the main port (real close to the Columbus statue).

I've been thinking about utilising Erik's idea when I do the same trip this summer. It's basically an overnight and most of the next day, and it drops you off right in Barcelona. Prices and times seem to be competitive with railroads. And there's just something about riding on a big ship...

Anyone else have experience with going from Italy to Spain via boat?
