Rome airport connection allowance

How much time should I allow for connection time from Rome to Milan after arriving to Rome from JFK? I've never flown in to Rome and have no idea how efficient they are. Also, I have a small dog with me, so I imagine there is an extra step at customs. I am thinking that since I have to change terminals when I arrive in Rome, that I also would have to go through customs there???? I am not flying directly to Milan ONLY because I want to go Business Class and ITA doesn't fly direct to Milan. Other airlines seem to not allow pet in cabin in business class.

Thanks!

Assuming you are having to buy 2 separate flights and have the extra issue of clearing an animal I think anything less than 4 hours is extraordinarily optimistic.

Had you considered taking the train to Milan. Its a 4 hr trip and ends IN Milan, not at the airport and hour away?

Yeah; I was afraid of that. THANKS, so much! My ultimate destination is Savona, so I probably would take the train there instead of to Milan, which means changing trains. At 77, it would be a hassle even packing light. I may have to just settle for something different so I can fly to Milan and have my family pick me up there. I'm breaking up the trip as it is: flying west coast to east coast; spending the night; then going to Milan the next day. Mostly for the pup's sake. I have done it many times before, but not alone and not with with this pup. She's used to flying, but not 8 hours.
