We are planning a trip along the Romantic Road from Munich to Rothenburg and we are thinking of renting the car and purchasing hotel vouchers from Reise-Profi Service GmbH. Does anyone have experience with this company? Their Web site is www.driveeurope.com.
I just did this route last October. I stayed one night in Nördlingen and one night in Feuchtwangen. Made my reservations online by email. Cost me €35 per night for a single room with breakfast. Didn't need no stink'n deposits or voucher, neither.
Thanks Kent for your reply. I appreciate the words of caution.
Hi Lee,
Thanks. I'm going to look into making my own arrangements as you suggested.
Linda, will you be traveling further along the Romantic Road than from Munich to Rothenburg? Are you aware that it is only about 3 hours from M to R? If you are doing a round trip from Munich to Rothenburg then consider spending 2 nights there.
"it is only about 3 hours from M to R".
True, if you just drive straight through. But if you just want to get to Rothenburg, that's not the way to go. There are interesting towns to see along the way, but the road itself is not that great, just a narrow, winding country road with traffic. Like I said, I took my time and spent the night in Nördlingen and Fuechtwangen. I particularly liked Nördlingen. Dinkelsbühl was a disappointment.
If you do just want to get to Rothenburg, and are not going to make stops along the way, take the train. It takes about the same time, 3-1/2hrs, but costs a lot less than renting a car (€27, total, for up to 5 people with a Bayern-Ticket), and you can watch the scenery instead of the road. In fact, you will spend about the same just for fuel for a car as you will for the Bayern-Ticket.
There is one particularly scenic stretch were the train parallels the Altmühl river.
Thanks everyone for the responses. We have a week for this vacation. We are going to meander along and off the Romantic Road. We want to see Ludwig's castles, at least one, Garmish-Partenkirchen, Nordlingen, Harburg, Augsburg, and we had thought Dinkelbuhl (but now we're not so sure about that).
Hey, you might like Dinkelbühl; a lot of people say they do. I think the biggest problem I had with Dinkelsbühl is that I had just had a thoroughly delightful 18 hrs in Nördlingen, and Dinkelsbühl didn't seem to measure up.
Lee - tell us more about Nördlingen, please. I'll be going that way the end of this month. I am interested in your impression.
Thanks
Linda,
We spent two nights in Rothenburg because of Rick's book and are glad we did. The Night Watchman's tour (when it is dark) is a hoot and you should try it. We stayed a few steps from the Square and the Clock and it was inexpensive and excellent- again a recommendation of Rick's guide. George, Pittsburgh
i stayed a night in Langenburg, thourghly delightful. we stayed above the butcher shop , 1st class breakfast . saw the castle and classic car museum. also saw a town crier walking main street with a hand bell announcing a water shortage, so no unecessary usage.m.l.
