Rolling backpack vs Rolling Carry on

Need advise to which would be better. Rolling Carry on or Rolling Backpack. I am a woman and only 5'3. In my 60's and receiving a gift for a piece of luggage. Which should I get?

I own the Rick Steve's Rolling Backpack and I love it, some people have trouble with it staying upright but it is just a matter of packing correctly. I can live out of my bag for a month easily because I use synthetic clothing that can be washed in the sink and is dry in 3-4 hours. If you are in good shape and hike and don't mind the weight on your back then I think you would like the Rolling Backpack. The Rolling Carry-on is perfect if all you want to do is roll it. I just noticed that they are on sale this week! So far I have been happy with all my RS Travel Store purchases, and I love packing light now when I travel.

I could copy most of what Donald has posted as I agree with almost everything. However, I have used a RS 21" roller bag for 10 summers now traveling all over Europe and have never had a problem with any non-smooth surfaces like cobblestones. I chose that one because of back problems that do not allow me to carry a pack on my back.

As long as it has wheels, it will be very handy. Personally I like bags that besides rolling can be carried with other means (strap across shoulder, on my back etc.). Rolling wheels aren't that helpful if you don't have a smooth surface to roll on. Therefore, although I do have a rigid suitcase that rolls, I prefer a backpack type with wheels. Also I don't like rigid suitcase because they can't be squeezed in tight spaces (such as small airplane overhead containers).

I used a rolling backpack for a few trips but found that I never used the backpack, even on cobblestones. Now I use the rolling carryon and have no problems. I'm 5'2".
