River cruise and Lake Geneva

We are thinking of taking a Rhine river cruise in 2014 from Amsterdam to Basel and then spending 3 nights in either Lausanne or Montreaux. Would we be better going to Switzerland before the cruise and cruising from Basel to Amsterdam, or fly to Amsterdam first
