Risk of purchase flights before passport ready

We are planning on departing in late June for a trip to Europe. It looks like we are in the sweet spot now (early March) to reserve airfare. The problem is I cannot apply for passports until March 14 due to a planned trip and work schedules.

We can purchase airfare before having passports, and if everything goes fine, we will have passports in plenty of time for travel. I guess the real question here is what is the real risk of something going wrong with the passports? We are natural-born US citizens, have all necessary documentation, including even certified birth certificates, and will go to a local government office to get the passport process started. I'm also good about details and properly completing paperwork. I think the risk should be minimal enough that I shouldn't fear reserving airfare.

What are your thoughts?

I dont think there is too big of risk. I booked flights for late may/early june for my mom who didn't have her passport yet (she has never had one before). She got it back within 2-3 weeks. The longer you wait though, risk does increase since they can take awhile to process if they get backed up/behind. If that is the case, you can pay extra to expedite the process.

Just expedite your passport renewal and go ahead and book your flight...not a big deal.

The only "sweet spot" is when the airfare is lower than normal...which is anytime!

You should be fine, but if you re really worried you can pay for expedited and they come in 2 weeks

I wouldn’t worry about it. 4-6 weeks is the stated processing time and you are well over that. I would just make absolutely sure your application is complete (don’t accidentally forget to sign something or miss a question). Make sure your photos are within the guidelines - any big name shop (or the post office) that offers passport photos with work fine.

If you are very concerned then pay to expedite it, but I don’t think that would be necessary.

Thanks, everyone! I will continue with my current plan, which will almost certainly have me purchasing airfare before I have passports in hand.

For a first time passport application, you have to apply in person, and the employee taking the documents won't send your packet along to central processing unless everything is in order.

The sooner you apply the sooner you will receive them....

I think the most important point, is to make sure your first and last name on your tickets will match the first and last name on your passport. In other words, no nicknames on the ticket.

My husband's passport was recently renewed and the new one was received 13 days from the day I mailed in the application!
