Are reservations necessary for this journey if one is walking on to the ferry.

When I was there several years ago, one did not need a reservation; however, I had to make one several days in advance for my auto.
I would get to the dock as early as you can in case you arrive on a busy day.

If you don't have a vehicle, then you don't need to be early. The ferry is huge. My guess it will hold several hundred passengers if not thousands. The limitation is vehicles.
