Hi,
I am considering flying to Berlin after our stay in the Rhine (Bacharach). My questions are what airline would you use? Do you need to check in 2 hours before a flight like in the US?

You would most likely either fly out of Dusseldorf or Frankfurt. For a flight to Berlin, I would probably get there 1.5 hours earlier.
Have you thought about taking a train instead? It is only 4 hours from Frankfurt. Once you add in your waiting time at each airport, you don't save a lot of time by flying.

Thanks Jo,
I was trying to decide between the two. But since I would have to be at the airport 1.5 hours before a flight. I think I will just go with my original plan, taking the train.

The closest airport to Bacharach would be Hahn (also referred to as Frankfurt-Hahn but it's almost 2 hours from Frankfurt). There is Ryanair-service (I mean they transport humans, that's it) from Hahn to Berlin-Schönefeld. Check with ryanair.com and hahn-airport.de... It would be a pretty easy drive from Bacharach to Hahn airport.
