Anyone know if we can catch a Rhine cruise between Koln and Mainz between April 16 - 19, 2011? If so, which do you recommend for those who would like to stop overnight in a town with good B&B and nearby Castle to explore? Hope to hear from someone soon and thanks in advance... Lynn

You must be looking for an overnight cruise. The K-D line, the biggest line on the Rhein, www.k-d.de, does not have cruises directly from Köln to Mainz. These are day cruises. Some start in Köln but don't go all the way to Koblenz. Only one, starting in Bad Breisig, goes all the way to Mainz.

Suggest you take the 7:53 train south to Bacharach (arriving around 9:30, change in Koblenz) which lies in the most scenic part of the Rhine River known as the Middle Rhine. North of there is Braubach, which houses the best castle in the area for touring - Marksburg. http://www.marksburg.de Drop bags at your B&B in Bacharach and catch the 10:15 boat to Braubach (arriving 12:20), then catch the castle tour at 1:00. You'll see a lot of castles on the cruise. Enjoy the town for a while, then train to St. Goar (via Koblenz) to visit Rheinfels Castle Ruins and the village. From there, it's only a 10-min. train ride back to Bacharach, a good place to enjoy your evening. You'll find some good B&B tips here: http://www.bensbauernhof.com/accommodationsrhinemosel.html

Thanks for the great suggestions. Do you know if the boat tours run in mid-April? I am hearing that they do not run until after Easter. I like the idea of taking the train to Koblenz then catching a boat tour (assuming they run April 16-18, 2011) Thanks again...
