Rhine cruise on KD / rail pass day use

I know the fare for these are covered by certain rail passes, but does one have to use a rail day or have traveled by rail that day to obtain the benefit ? Im contemplating a "down day" without train travel but making use of the cruise boats, dont want to burn a use day.
( I searched but did not see the specifics of this)

Correct, and the K-D boats are a 'covered' benefit. But unless you want to spend all day on the boat, it may be cheaper to just pay for the boat and not use a railpass day. For instance, a round trip boat trip from St. Goar to Koblenz costs €20 and takes most of the day (10:55 am -5:20 pm) with a 50 min stop over in Koblenz.

My favorite part of the Rhine is Bacharach to St. Goar. That takes almost 2 hrs RT and costs €12,10. Spend the rest of the time looking at Bacharach and the Rheinfels castle ruins in St. Goar.

Another good trip would be from Bacharach to Braubach to see the Marksburg castle. That would cost €25 RT and takes 8hr 15 min with a 2hr 45 min stay in Braubach.

Hmm maybe I found my own answer- I guess the distinction is a "Covered" benefit starts the day use, but a "Discounted" benefit does not.

Thanks Lee thats exactly what I concluded. The Return tickets only seem like a few Euros more than the one-way, so I could park my carcass on the boat for a few hours and have a lazy day.
