reserving tickets in italy and france

i believe i've seen it said that you only need to reserve a seat in italy and france? do you have to reserve seats on every train in italy or just some trains? do you do this online?

i will be traveling from vernazza to paris and am thinking i will need to reserve for this leg.

thanks for your help - i'm leaving in three days and am getting a little stressed.

You do NOT have to reserve seats on every train and in fact you often cannot do so. For example, I highly doubt reservations are taken on trains to Vernazza. If you're doing a night train, say Paris to Genoa or Turin, that should be reserved ahead of time though.

Yup online. Only certain types of trains can be booked ahead of time (In Italy they are denoted as ES-Eurostar Italia or IC-Intercity, while R-Regionale may not be booked ahead of time). Night trains may also be booked of course.
