Reservations - yes or no?

I'll be traveling in Spain in January/February and would like your opinion about making reservations in Seville and Granada ahead of time. I will be in Madrid and Burgos earlier and may discover I want to stay longer. Hate to get locked in to a schedule. What do you think? I want to stay in some of Rick's recommended accommodations.

This is most likely not a high tourist season, unless perhaps in the south where those from northern Europe may be escaping the cold of the north. You will need tickets in advance for the Alhambra (get them on line), but should be no problems for other sites. You can get AVE tickets with a discount if you are over 60 (?) by purchasing the proper pass at the information desk in the station. The weather may be a bit dicey, but the fun will be there!

If you're carrying a notebook or laptop, just make your first reservation.

You can easily find someplace to stay as you go along your way. The internet lets you be more variable than ever.

Thanks! You made my day... I was hoping I could go this time of the year and be very flexible because it's low season. I will take my IPad and info on possible accommodations from Rick Steve's and other's guides.. I have cold and wet weather gear plus three months of traveling ahead of me. Spain for about one month then farther north. On with the adventure!

We traveled Spain in April 2012 - which is the start of high season there - and had no trouble finding rooms as we went. I doubt you will have any trouble asking to stay an extra day without advance notice while you are traveling. The key for me is to do research so I have a list of good places to choose from before I travel.

I do make reservations for any parts of my trip that are locked in (arrival day, night before departure). Other than that, I research a list of places that seem like good lodging choices, make a contact spreadsheet and store it in my Ipod touch, then call the morning I expect to arrive. In almost all cases, we ended up in our first choice.

The unusual experience was Granada. Number one choice was "completo" (full). Number two choice couldn't guarantee us the same room for our whole stay (but wanted us to come and guaranteed we would have a room, even if we had to move from one room to another). Number three was below our standards (it's high traveler ratings were probably based on the cheap price) so we skipped it. We ended up staying at number four on our list, which was both nice and affordable.
