We are traveling from Milan to Spiez.. same train, no changes. We are purchasing a ticket from Milan to Domodossola. From that point our Swiss Card picks up. But how do we get reservations for the whole trip?
How about the ticket counter in Milan, or any other station you pass through before then?
I think there is a "passholder's" fare so you don't have to play the game with the ticket only to the border. Then your seat reservation will cover the entire trip. At least that's what we did in 2006. We just went to the ticket office in Milan and said we had the Swiss pass and wanted to go to Lucerne, etc.
A Passholder fare (sometimes referred to as a "reservation") is what they call the ticket supplement you have to pay to ride a premium train that isn't entirely covered by the railpass. Passholder fares are charged for travel on, for example, Italian Eurostar (ES) and Thalys. In Italy, passholder fares for ES are often almost as much as the fare itself. For Milan to Domodossola, if is on a ES*, there would be a supplement.
But, although the ticket (or supplement) for a ES* includes a reservation, the passholder fare is not necessarily a reservation.
Travel from Milan to Spiez might be on a Cisalpino train, which does require a railpassholder supplement and does include a reservation.
My only problem with getting the ticket/reservation in Milan is the time element. We waited in line for almost an hour in Termini for a ticket to Florence. We won't have a lot of time in Milan. Do you think we could accomplish this in Monterosso?
We always use BETS for rail tickets when we travel through more than one country. It is based in Michigan and it is the easy way to plan rail travel. The BETS people are super helpful and share lots of great advice. We made a trip last spring starting in Florence and ending in the Berner Oberland area. The Swiss pass did become effective in Domodossola.
