reservations on overnight trains

How soon do I need to make reservations for an overnight train? Can I wait until I get to a particular city to make the reservation for the outgoing overnight train or will it get sold out? How often do trains get sold out?

1) Now or as soon as it becomes available 2a)No 2b)Probably
3)Overnight ones - lots; daytime ones - rarely
