I have a three country saver Eurail pass for Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic...I want to reserve a sleeper from Budapest to Prague...but the maps show it will go through Slovakia...(My pass does not include that country). What do I need to do? How do I make a reservation in advance from the U.S.?
Buy a ticket through Slovakia in Budapest. I'm not sure whether they will sell you a ticket from border to border. You might have to buy the ticket from Budapest to Breclav. I'm not sure if that train will take one or two days of your rail pass. According to the 7 PM rule, you can't change trains before 4 AM, but here you are not changing trains, just getting off at 3:59. And Rick says the 7 AM rule does not apply to Eastern Europe, but what does? Alternatively, you could buy a standard fare ticket and save the rail pass for another day. BTW, that night train arrives in Prague at about 4 AM. Is that really what you want? There are some day train routes through Vienna that go through Gyor, Hungary, instead of through Slovakia. Maybe you should take an evening train to Vienna, spend the night there, and take a morning train to Prague.
As Lee said, you will need to buy a ticket in Budapest for the ride through Slovakia. You can reserve your sleeping accommodations for the entire route on raileurope.com.
Thanks for the info...I just made the reservation! for Mucho $'s...and yes, 4 a.m. will be an interesting time to greet the pigeons of Prague. One hopes there is a fine restaurant nearby with comfort food.
