research on best day to buy tickets

Interesting article in today's (October 23) Wall Street Journal about recent industry study on best days to book fares. According to the study, its Sunday, although Tuesday is still the day most sales and deals are announced by airlines. Also, article notes that international fares don't change much between 10 and 3 months out, climbing within three months of flight. More info better explained, in the article.

I read this article too and thought it very interesting. It lists the average price of international tickets sold between 10 months and 3 months out as a range between $1000 and $1500. It also said the average consumer spends about 12 days shopping for airline tickets. The cheapest time to buy domestic flights was about 2 months out from the travel date.

It really does confirm the advice often given on this site that if you see a price you feel is a good price your ticket, buy it!

Which I will now discredit! Out of curiosity, I have kept tracking that. Never seen anything approaching this on any day sicne then. in fact, fares that I watched here have consistently not dropped at all. I ahve no logical explanation for what happened with these, other than I am very happy I stumbled on it.

I noticed a week ago Tuesday an airfare of <$1100 for our open jaw flight StL to AMS returning to StL from CDG. It was with AA but British Airways was the carrier. I thought I wanted to have the "comfort" seats which allow more legroom and by the time I added that in (plus the fact that it was a 2 stop flight) it came to around $1300. I hesitated and when I looked it up that evening (just a few hours later) it had gone back up in price. Lesson is reiterated here......don't hesitate and don't look back!
