RER-C to Versailles

Given that the RER lines run inside the city of Paris in addition to outside, I believe that a regular ticket (or one use of a Carnat) will let you ride an RER train. However, something tells me I will not be able to use a regular ticket for the train all the way to Versailles.

How does this work? You use the ticket to go through the turnstile, or does a regular Metro ticket (or Carnat) not work at the RER-C station (such as the one near the Eiffel Tower or near Musee D'Orsay)?

Thanks!!

thanks, Steve - I forgot about the turnstiles at the exit, where you still have to use your ticket.

Be aware that the RER C line divides on the west side of Paris. Be sure to get on a train that is going to Versailles-Rive Gauche. The current fare from anywhere in central Paris is 3.05 EUR each way.

Also although there are signs on the platform the trains themselves don't have destinations on the front, just four-letter codes. The train to Versailles Rive Gauche has the code VICK.
