Request for train route suggestions

Hi Folks,

I am traveling to Europe for the first time. I have looked at train routes so much I'm cross eyed. Can you help me? In late July I would like to travel by train from London to Interlaken, spend a night or two in the Alps in that area, then pass through Munich and the Romantic Road area, and on to Prague. A slower ride through the Alps is preferrable, and the rest could be on a fast train. Can anyone recommend even a section of train routes along the way? Thank you so much for any help you can offer!

Check germanwings.com, tuifly.com, airberlin.com, easyjet.com, lufthansa.com, ba.com for cheap flights from London to Cologne. Check www.bahn.de then (once you know when you'll get into Cologne airport) for trains from "Cologne Airport" to "Interlaken". Then select the "details" button and make sure the train goes via Koblenz and NOT via Limburg. You don't want to be on a bullet ICE train but rather on an IC to EC towards Mainz. That way you get to see most of the romantic setting of the rhine river gorge, the area with the highest medival castles density in the entire world! You can also use www.bahn.de for schedules from Interlaken to "Munich Hbf" or check with the Swiss sbb.ch. The romantic road is a road and not so much a rail-road but at least you can get to Rothenburg ob der Tauber from Munich Hbf. Again use www.bahn.de for schedules and fares. Same goes for "Rothenburg ob der Tauber" to "Praha". I suppose you'll then look for a cheap flight on csa.com, ba.com, skyeurope.com...

Sharon, that is an awful lot of train travel before you hit the Alps. You might not enjoy it as much as you hope. Or were you planning on stopping along the way, say in Paris?

If not, an alternative would be to fly to Zurich or Mulhouse and get on scenic trains there. If you can find a cheap flight I think it is worth it, saving you time and money and delivering you fresh to the Alps.

The lifts and trains out of Interlaken--up the Schlithorn, to Mannlichen, and the Jungfrau, and elsewhere--are amazing.

Thank you, Andreas and Adam. After processing an abundance of information and your advice, I have decided to travel to and from Switzerland by air. (I am now investigating inexpensive airlines.) Expedience has won out. I am no longer cross eyed! Yeah! Thanks again, Sharon.
