I will be spending 4 weeks in Italy and want to rent a car. I want a diesel but the websites don't give you that option. How can I rent a diesel? And will be picking up in Venice Airport, which company do you recommend?

Vivien - it would complicate things for the rental car companies to have to guarantee reservation for diesel vs. gas; and most people don't care - they just take whichever is available. I've used both Avis and Hertz in Europe and had good experiences. Why is the diesel so important for you?

Call gemut.com or AutoEurope and tell them that you would like to rent a diesel. They know what is available and should have no problem finding you one at a good price Be sure to look into the diesel turbos; I am looking forward to renting one of those myself. But for four weeks, be sure to do some comparisons between renting and leasing. I have never had the option of leasing, but a lot of people recommend it for long-term rentals.
